Apple’s Tap to Pay technology is now available to merchants and users in New Zealand, making it easier than ever to accept contactless payments. Merchants can use their iPhone or Apple Watch to accept payments from contactless debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, or other digital wallets—no extra hardware is needed.
To enable Tap to Pay, merchants need a partner-enabled iOS app on their iPhones. Customers can use the feature with an iPhone Xs or later, running the latest iOS version, or with an Apple Watch.
At launch, platforms like Adyen, ANZ Bank, Stripe, Windcave, and Worldline will support Tap to Pay in New Zealand. Payment apps such as me&u and Timely will also offer the service.
The feature uses NFC technology to process payments securely. Supported payment networks include American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, and Visa. Apple ensures all transactions are encrypted and securely handled through the Secure Element chip on the device, providing users with peace of mind.
New Zealand joins a growing list of regions with Tap to Pay on iPhone, including Australia, Brazil, Taiwan, the UK, Canada, most EU countries, and the US, where the feature first launched in 2022. Earlier this year, it expanded to include platforms like Zettle and Venmo in the US.
