LG Display has reportedly incurred significant losses due to the canceled microLED Apple Watch project. The company invested heavily, including buying 14 U.S. patents related to microLED technology from Taiwan’s Ultra Display. LG also relocated equipment, prepared production space, and assembled a specialized team for the project. Without formal contracts, some of its equipment partners may now seek compensation for their investments.
Apple’s decision to cancel the project was driven by concerns over the high production costs and difficulties in manufacturing microLED displays at scale. Despite the potential benefits, including brighter displays and better power efficiency, Apple deemed the technology too expensive for the Apple Watch.
