Apple’s strategic shift towards an ad-supported Apple TV+ is becoming increasingly apparent. The company’s recent meetings with the UK’s Broadcaster’s Audience Research Board (BARB) to discuss advertising tracking highlight Apple’s growing interest in this revenue stream. What’s even more apparent are the strategic steps taken so far, including hiring ad executives and scaling back Apple TV+ spending.

By introducing an ad-supported tier, Apple can potentially tap into a larger audience seeking a more affordable streaming option. This aligns with the broader industry trend, as competitors like Netflix and Disney+ have successfully launched ad-supported plans.

Moreover, an ad-supported model could generate significant additional revenue, offsetting the rising costs of content production and allowing Apple to invest in more premium programming.

Apple TV+ launched in 2019 for $4.99 a month without ads. However, the price has increased over the years to $6.99/month in late 2022 and $9.99/month in late 2023. If Apple introduces an ad-supported plan, it might start around the original $4.99 price.

Apple’s keen approach to its services suggests that any ad-supported tier will be carefully integrated into the overall user experience. The company’s strong brand reputation and focus on privacy will likely shape the advertising strategy, ensuring that ads are minimally disruptive and respecting user data.

With that said, introducing an ad-supported Apple TV+ could be a new wave for the company, expanding its reach and solidifying its position in the competitive streaming landscape.
