Apple has informed Patreon that it must use Apple’s in-app purchase system for subscriptions, which could raise membership prices by up to 30%. For years, Apple has required developers to use its own payment system for in-app purchases, which has become controversial, especially in light of the Epic Games lawsuit and new EU regulations.

Last year, Apple told Patreon it had to implement Apple’s billing system for specific digital purchases, which started in 2024. Now, this requirement will extend to Patreon subscriptions, potentially affecting both subscribers and creators.

Starting in November, Apple’s 30% fee will apply to all new subscriptions made through the iPhone app, but existing subscriptions will not be affected. This means creators might have to raise their prices by 30% to offset the fee or accept a 30% cut in income from new iPhone subscribers, which is unlikely.

Currently, Patreon allows creators to adjust prices for digital goods on iOS to offset the fee, and this option will also apply to subscriptions. The company has promised to support creators through this transition for a year, starting in November.

While this change may seem like a cash grab by Apple, the overall impact may be minimal. Many creators will likely use Patreon’s pricing adjustment tool, but with cheaper alternatives available on other platforms, potential subscribers may choose to sign up through Patreon’s website to save money while still supporting their favorite creators.
