A recent report by 9to5Mac claims to have uncovered a unique touchscreen interface hidden within the tvOS 18 beta 3 code. This finding is significant for the HomePod because its software is based on tvOS. The interface, codenamed “PlasterBoard,” follows Apple’s naming convention for similar interfaces like SpringBoard (iOS/iPadOS), PineBoard (tvOS), SoundBoard (HomePod), and SurfBoard (visionOS).

Currently, PlasterBoard seems limited to a Lock Screen with a touch keyboard for passcode entry. Further details about its functionality remain unknown.

The Apple TV and HomePod currently doesn’t offer a passcode lock. While the Apple TV beta included an on-screen keypad similar to iPhones and iPads, this feature isn’t available yet. The HomePod only supports basic control gestures.

Based on recent rumors, Apple appears to be exploring multiple avenues for its smart home devices. There are whispers of a ‌HomePod‌ with a touch display, while others rumor a more feature-rich version with a built-in camera, similar to the Amazon Echo Show.

The rumors even hint at a potential ‌HomePod‌ that combines a screen and camera. That said, Apple might be considering different options for a central smart home hub, ranging from a basic display to a multi-functional device.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a 7-inch display HomePod launch in 2024, with leaked prototypes suggesting a touch display. This could be the first HomePod with a built-in screen.

No current HomePod or Apple TV devices use the “HomeAccessory” identifier. However, it’s similar to the “AudioAccessory” identifier Apple uses internally for HomePods. Based on the numbering scheme, this upcoming device likely packs the same A18 chip expected in the iPhone 16 lineup.
