Apple is reportedly advancing its plans to develop an iPhone with a folding screen. According to multiple unconfirmed reports from Tuesday, the first foldable iPhone could debut in 2026.

The iPhone Fold would represent the first major departure from the traditional “slab” design of iOS handsets, marking a significant innovation in the iPhone lineup.

The original iPhone set the standard for smartphones in 2007. For over a decade, every phone followed its flat, glass slab design. But then flexible displays came along, and companies like Samsung tried to capitalize on the new tech, though not very successfully.

Initially, Apple ignored foldable phones, sticking with their classic design. But that might change soon.

“Apple is working on a foldable iPhone,” reported The Information on Tuesday. The project is already progressing, with Apple reportedly contacting suppliers in Asia for parts. The first foldable iPhone might launch as early as 2026.

Taiwan’s Digitimes also reported similar news on Tuesday. According to their sources in Korea, Apple is researching and developing its first foldable iPhone, aiming for a 2026 release.

Both reports agree on the design of the foldable iPhone. It will likely open to be tall and thin, similar to old flip phones. This design would let the phone close with the screen folded inside, acting as its own protective case.

If these rumors are accurate, 2026 seems like a realistic target. This spring, two analysts predicted that a foldable iPhone is about two years away.
