While the first foldable iPhone hasn’t even hit shelves yet, Apple is already eyeing its successor. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is exploring a “square, clamshell-style” foldable, though he cautions the device is currently “under consideration” rather than a guaranteed release.
If realized, a “clamshell” iPhone would pit Apple directly against Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola’s Razr. This early pivot suggests Apple is bullish on its first foldable—rumored for a late 2026 debut—and is already planning to capitalize on the anticipated demand. This isn’t Apple’s first dance with the form factor, either; The Information previously reported on early clamshell prototypes.
However, Apple’s foldable ambitions are split. While a smaller “Flip” is on the table, Gurman also notes internal interest in a larger, book-style device. Plans for a massive, iPad-sized foldable have reportedly hit development hurdles, pushing a potential launch out to 2029.
