Despite everything Apple TV can do, the tvOS operating system still lacks a web browser like Safari. This means users can’t easily share content directly from Apple TV. However, this will soon change with the upcoming tvOS 18 update.
Opening Web Links from tvOS Apps on iPhone
According to Sigmund Judge, a respected Apple analyst and editor at ScreenTimes, the latest beta version of tvOS 18 includes a new feature that allows users to open web links from tvOS apps on their iPhone or iPad. This feature was highlighted in a recent developer release on Monday.
Currently, Apple TV+ offers a series of immersive videos in 180-degree 3D 8K, designed for the Apple Vision Pro headset. Although these videos can only be viewed with the Vision Pro, Apple promotes them through the Apple TV app. With tvOS 18, a new button in the description of these videos lets users find more details about Vision Pro.
Instead of opening the web page on the Apple TV, the system uses AirDrop to send the link to the user’s iPhone or iPad.
This web link feature is currently primarily used for Immersive Videos, but it’s expected to eventually allow users to share content they’re watching or listening to directly from the tvOS app.
