The Apple Watch is emerging as a powerful tool for managing health, potentially saving lives through early detection of heart disease. One user’s Apple Watch alerted them to an irregular heartbeat, leading to a diagnosis and treatment for atrial fibrillation – a potentially serious condition. This user trust is now being echoed by the medical community. Doctors are increasingly seeing the Apple Watch’s potential as a valuable tool for tracking health, particularly in diagnosing and managing heart disease.

Dr. Rod Passman, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at Northwestern Medicine, strongly advocates for the Apple Watch’s role in healthcare. He believes the device has become increasingly important, helping patients monitor their heart rhythm and even aiding post-surgical recovery.

In a recent interview with CBS News, Dr. Passman explained, “The Apple Watch offers a variety of health benefits. “It empowers patients to take charge of their health by allowing them to see how their lifestyle choices impact their well-being. For me, it’s a game-changer in remote patient monitoring. No matter where my patients are, I can use the watch’s EKG function to keep an eye on their heart rhythm”. (IndiaToday)

Dr. Passman emphasizes the importance of consulting a doctor even with the convenience of the Apple Watch and similar devices. “While the watch can be a valuable tool, it shouldn’t replace a medical diagnosis,” he explained to CBS News. “We need confirmation from medical-grade equipment before starting any treatment. However, the Apple Watch’s EKG function is quite accurate at detecting irregular rhythms, and when interpreted by a doctor, it can be a powerful aid.”

Dr. Passman sees smartwatches like Apple Watches as game-changers in healthcare. They enable real-time monitoring, data collection, and improved patient engagement. This allows patients to track their heart health, share data with doctors, and receive personalized care plans.

The ease of use of these devices empowers individuals to track their health at home, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits. This remote monitoring is especially helpful for those in remote areas or with mobility challenges, ensuring they receive continuous care regardless of location. Dr. Passman echoes this, encouraging his patients to “find a device that works with their phone and budget.”

Apple Watches with ECG Functionality

  • Apple Watch Series 4 and later (including Series 5, 6, 7, 8, and the current Series 9)
  • Apple Watch Ultra (all models)

The Apple Watch Series 9, released in September 2023, is Apple’s latest offering in its wearable lineup. Building on the successes of previous models, the Series 9 prioritizes health and safety features. It has enhanced heart health monitoring with functions like ECG for heart rhythm checks, irregular rhythm detection, and blood oxygen monitoring (available since Series 6).

Crash detection and emergency SOS provide additional peace of mind by automatically contacting help in case of accidents. Beyond health, the Series 9 features a faster chip, a brighter Always-On Retina display, sleep tracking, and various fitness tracking capabilities. Available in two sizes and various styles, the Series 9 offers a balance of advanced technology and a customizable look.

Where to Buy an Apple Watch

You can buy an Apple Watch from several retailers, both online and in person. Here are a few options:

  • Apple: Apple sells Apple Watches directly through its website, https://www.apple.com/watch/, and in its physical Stores. It offers the widest variety of models and configurations, and you can often get help setting up your watch in-store.
  • Authorized Retailers: Many major retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, eBay, Target, and Walmart also sell Apple Watches. You can find them online or in their physical stores. Selection may vary depending on the retailer.
  • Cellular Carriers: If you want an Apple Watch with cellular connectivity, you can also purchase one from your cellular carrier. This allows you to make calls and use data on your watch without needing your phone nearby.

Choosing the right Apple Watch with ECG

  • ECG and basic health features: Apple Watch SE (if available in your region) or Series 4/5.
  • Balance of features, design, and affordability: Series 6/7/8 or the new Series 9.
  • Durability, long battery life, and advanced features: Apple Watch Ultra.

Additional Notes:

  • The ECG app is not a replacement for professional medical diagnosis. It’s intended to flag potential heart rhythm issues for further evaluation by a doctor.
  • ECG functionality may not be available in all regions due to regulatory approvals.
