Back in June 2022, Apple first gave us a glimpse of its next-generation CarPlay alongside iOS 16 at WWDC. The wait is almost over, and WWDC 2024 brought a wave of new details about how this exciting software will transform your car’s experience.

Apple’s next-generation system aims to dominate your car’s screens, offering a seamless experience with features like controlling the climate with just a tap and other in-car functions. But will your car be ready?

Apple’s deep integration requires next-generation CarPlay-compatible hardware. If your car doesn’t support it, you’ll need to upgrade it or get a wireless adapter to enjoy the latest features.

Why is the new CarPlay going all wireless?

There are two main reasons why Apple is moving CarPlay towards a wireless future:

  • Seamless user experience: The next generation of CarPlay aims to be much more integrated with the car’s systems, potentially controlling things like the instrument cluster and climate control. To enable this deeper functionality, a constant, reliable connection is needed, and wireless is seen as the way to achieve that seamless experience.
  • Convenience: Wires can be a hassle to deal with, especially when getting in and out of the car. Removing the need to physically connect your phone frees up space and makes using CarPlay more convenient.

It’s worth noting that there are some trade-offs. Wired connections are generally considered more stable than wireless connections, so the switch has a potential downside. However, Apple is likely confident it can ensure a strong and reliable wireless connection for CarPlay.
