In a big upgrade, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the iPhone 18 Pro’s wide-angle lens will have a variable aperture.
Earlier camera rumors for future iPhones, including the iPhone 17, have mentioned improvements like better background blur (bokeh) and a front camera upgrade to 24MP. Now, Kuo says he has reliable sources that confirm the iPhone 18 Pro will feature this variable aperture.
In a blog post, Kuo shares that this change will “greatly enhance the user’s photography experience.” A variable aperture allows the camera to adjust to different lighting and control the light reaching the sensor before a shot is taken. This can improve focus and depth of field and offer options for more background blur or sharper focus.
Additional iPhone 18 rumors suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a powerful 2nm processor, possibly exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max due to cost. Called the A20, this processor could have separate components for flexibility in adding RAM, though this change won’t impact most users directly.
Lastly, the iPhone 18 Pro might introduce under-screen Face ID, which would remove the need for the notch, a feature on iPhones since the iPhone X in 2017.
